Where he comes from

Raised working alongside his dad

Lynn's father, Bud Luckett, served as a Dyersburg police officer and owned several businesses in town. Lynn started working for him at 13, mixing mortar and carrying brick. Later he was flipping hamburgers and cooking steaks behind the grill at the family's restaurants.

Around Lynn's senior year at Dyersburg High School, the family tried their hand at farming. Those were hard years to farm, and Lynn worked a second job to get by. When farming didn't work out, he went looking for a trade.

His dad's years on the police force stayed with Lynn too. As Bud neared the end of his life, he shared some of what he had seen on the job. It gave Lynn a deep respect for the people who serve in law enforcement.

His career

From electrician to senior electrical engineer

Lynn studied engineering at Southern Illinois University. He went to work for an electrical company in Dyersburg and learned the basics on the job. The whole time, he kept studying, and he built what he was learning in his own shop.

I wanted to make sure that I was not just learning from a book.
Lynn Luckett

That way, when someone he was responsible for needed help, he could show them exactly how the work was done.

He worked as an electrician in the steel mills and moved into engineering, where he has spent about the last 20 to 25 years. Today he is a senior electrical engineer. His work has included developing project scope, designing electrical control circuits, programming robotics and PLCs, and developing mechanical drawings for equipment.

In industry, Lynn says, decisions should be driven by evaluations and data. He believes the same approach can help the City of Dyersburg plan its work and spend its money wisely.

Family and faith

Kim, three children, and a church that reaches out

Lynn and Kim have been married for 40 years. They started out in a small apartment with not much more than a coffee table, and they raised their three children right here in Dyersburg. Today Lynn is a grandfather too.

She is my backbone and my strength.
Lynn Luckett

Lynn and Kim are members of Church Without Walls. Lynn values the way the church reaches out to people who might never walk through the doors of a church. Faith is an important part of his life. He doesn't force it on anyone, and he's glad to talk about it with anyone who wants to listen.

How he leads

Leading by example

I'm not a leader that barks orders. I can't just say, here you go, and walk off. That's not leadership.
Lynn Luckett

Lynn believes a plan needs people who understand it and a leader willing to help carry it through. He believes public office should be held with a servant's heart.

You want somebody to be honest, you better be honest. You want somebody to work hard, you better know how to work hard. You want somebody to follow you, you better know how to lead.
Lynn Luckett

Lynn knows he has more to learn about city operations. He is willing to do that work and lead by example.
